Easily one of the most anticipated products in Spyderco's history, the Para 3 represents the latest evolution of their immensely popular Paramilitary family of folding knives. Its lineage can be traced back to the original Paramilitary model, introduced in 2004, and even further to its inspiration: the iconic Military Model.
The original design intent of the Paramilitary was to deliver the same proven reliability and cutting performance as the Military, but in a more compact and portable package. This design also featured Spyderco's patented Compression Lock—a high-strength locking mechanism integrated into the spine of the handle, offering several significant advantages over the Military's liner lock.
In line with Spyderco's unwavering commitment to Constant Quality Improvement (C.Q.I.), the Paramilitary was redesigned in 2010, resulting in the Paramilitary 2. This second-generation model incorporated an improved lock detent, refined ergonomics, countersunk handle and pivot screws, and a four-position clip that accommodates all possible carry configurations. These enhancements quickly established the "Para 2" as one of Spyderco's most sought-after models, and for many users, it became the "perfect" folding knife. While it was notably smaller than the Military Model that inspired it, some customers still found it larger than what they could comfortably or legally carry. Responding to this feedback, Spyderco returned to the drawing board to distill all the features, benefits, and performance of the Paramilitary 2 into a "sub-compact" design centred around a three-inch blade. The result is the Para 3.
Although clearly derived from the Paramilitary 2, the Para 3 is not designated as the "Paramilitary 3" because its smaller size qualifies it as a distinct knife design. The "3" in its name actually refers to its three-inch blade length rather than indicating it as a third generation of the Paramilitary design. While its heritage is unmistakable, the Para 3 (along with its model and SKU number) possesses its own unique identity as a Spyderco product.
That said, the Para 3 faithfully retains all the defining features of the best-selling Paramilitary 2, but in a more compact and convenient package. Its three-inch blade is precision machined from premium CPM-S45VN stainless steel and features a full-flat grind for superior edge geometry and low-friction cutting performance. The oversized Trademark Round Hole proudly signifies the knife's lineage and is easily accessible from either side, allowing for swift, ambidextrous, one-handed opening.
The lightweight, open-backed handle is constructed on a framework of robust stainless steel liners nested within textured G10 scales. This refined construction maximizes both structural strength and ergonomics while keeping the handle slim and pocket-friendly. It also serves as the foundation for the knife's patented Compression Lock mechanism, which provides exceptional lock strength while allowing for easy one-handed closing without placing your fingers in the path of the blade's edge. A streamlined four-position hourglass clip and a generously sized lanyard hole complete the design, offering options for left or right-side tip-up or tip-down carry, as well as facilitating the easy attachment of lanyards or fobs.
The Para 3 is a remarkably refined folding knife with a distinguished history. It stands as a testament to our relentless pursuit of perfection and our deep commitment to meeting our customers' needs.
